There is no doubt that for any number of colleges, the application essay is a major factor in the final admissions decision. The thought of this can strike fear into the heart of even the most confident student, let alone one who is not certain their voice is strong enough to make the right impression. Having a consultant who can facilitate the essay writing process can give your student direction and confidence. Many of the students I work with even find the process enjoyable!
Having read literally thousands of application essays over 15 years in college admissions, I have seen submissions that were good, bad and everything in between. Regardless of how their essay turned out, I respected that each student had something important to say; however many of those messages fell short because they were underdeveloped and lacked the input of a critical reviewer.
I don’t write the essays for your student, rather, through a series of discussions and online notes I help them find a way to express the best of themselves in a way that is appealing to an audience they really don’t know. Most students can identify a meaningful message to relay about a topic that is important to them. I help them find a way to think about their essay from their audience’s point of view and express themselves intelligently and distinctly with an engaging and unique voice.
The more time we have to work on the essay, the better the process and outcome will be. Ideally we would have at least 1 to 2 weeks (or two weekends) to develop a great essay; however, with availability, I have worked with students at an accelerated pace over the course of a couple of days.
